Educate yourself at election forum

Attend the Colorado Springs Ballot Measure and School Board Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Penrose Library Carnegie Reading Room (20 N. Cascade) and get engaged in this year’s election. This lively forum will include pro and con speakers and audience questions about Colorado Springs ballot measures 2C and 300, and presentations by school board candidates from District 11 and District 2. Enjoy free Bristol beer at a reception following the forum. This event is free and open to the public. Photo exhibits offer space-eye view of Earth

NASAThere will be photo exhibits on loan from NASA on display at the East and Penrose Libraries for the month of October as part of All Pikes Peak Reads 2009.

At East Library, Special Effects from Space contains dazzling views of the ever-changing surface of the Earth and its atmosphere. Penrose Library’s Art Gallery is housing America from Space, spectacular shots of this country from the unique perspective of outer space. Both collections contain captions to shed further light on these startling images. Be sure to check out both exhibits this month and experience a truly out-of-this-world visual journey.

Community resources: Luxury or necessity?

Dream City: Vision 2020Are things like public transportation, city parks, and community centers luxuries or necessities? Does our communal assessment change depending on the current economic conditions? If we deem these things necessities, how should we pay for them?

Witness The Power of Print

Page from 1455 Gutenberg BibleThe Power of Print exhibit will illustrate the use of words and images to convey ideas, propaganda, and the merchandising of goods and services. The exhibit will cover the story from the 17th Century to World War II. A unique formal opening will take place in the Penrose Library Carnegie Reading Room on Saturday, May 2 (from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) with a viewing of the PPLD original 1455 Gutenberg Bible page, a special copy of the Magna Carta, and a spectacular 20 foot graphic of The Great Exhibition of 1851.

The first 200 visitors to the opening event will have the opportunity of choosing a free gift of either a set of the new Lincoln pennies or a mint copy of an old postage stamp issued to honor the 500th anniversary of the Gutenberg Bible in 1952.

The exhibit will run in Penrose Library’s Special Collections through October 31.

Marlice Van Zandt and Michael Shealy from Touch the Earth Ranch in the Black Forest will introduce you to these charming animals.

Classical music coming to Penrose Library

musicAmoreThe string quartet musicAmore, made up of musicians from the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, will present an informal concert of delightful music. Come pull up a chair and listen, or enjoy the music as you read or browse the library.
