The CQ Researcher is the perfect answer for people who need a place to begin research on current topics. This weekly publication covers the most current and controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, insight into all sides of the issues, bibliographies and more.

Opposing Viewpoints (located with other books on the topic you are researching)
The Opposing Viewpoints series includes many volumes, each on a controversial topic. Each book includes several essays that address opposite points of view on the issue, so they are especially helpful in understanding all sides of a debate topic or research question. To find these volumes, do a word search in the library catalog: for example, animal rights and opposing viewpoints or environment and opposing viewpoints.

Other series similar to Opposing Viewpoints are Issues in Focus and At Issue.

Debate Central
An online resource created and maintained by the National Center for Policy Analysis for high school students researching the nationwide high school debate topic.

High School Debate Topics 1998 - present
Includes the text of current and past High School Debate Topics with innumerable links from the University of Michigan.

Hot paper topics
Maintained by St. Ambrose University, this site has excellent links to research sources on a variety of paper topics on controversial social issues.

Paper Topics
A guide to help find ideas or topics for writing papers and links to other helpful sites.

Social Issues
You'll find many debate topics listed here--censorship, drunk driving, gun control, homelessness, and plenty more. For each topic you are provided with links to various Web resources that can help you find lots of information. An important feature of this site is that it gives links to current legislation on the various topics. A super-helpful site from Multnomah County Library.

Yahoo Full Coverage
This news site is especially helpful when you want to find out what the hot happenings are on your topic. The site is organized by broad topics, but your best bet is to search it. Click in the search box, for example, and type "affirmative action" or abortion.

Yahoo's Issues and Causes
Links to articles and web sites on various topics. There is a lot of information here, but the collection of articles for each topics is not always balanced. Sometimes you may need to go elsewhere to find an opposing viewpoint for your issue.

Ebsco's MasterFILE Premier
This magazine database indexes for over 1,800 periodicals covering nearly all subjects, providing many articles in full-text.  You can search by keyword or subject, in a basic or advanced search mode, and can print or e-mail the article for your use.

Opposing ViewPoints
Social issues database of current event topics - the facts as well as the arguments of each topic’s proponents and detractors.
