The Torches of Knowledge
The Torches of Knowledge

Carnegie did not insist that his name be engraved at the front entrance of the libraries he gave. However, he never objected and upon request would always send a portrait of himself to hang near the entrance.

The one thing he did want was that above the front door there would be a representation of the rays of the rising sun and the motto "Let there be light." Colorado Springs was one of the communities that did not comply, providing instead the classical torches of knowledge. Now these torches illuminate the Library's new mission "to inform, to empower, to inspire."
